Agbekpornu stars as Ghana pip Algeria in U23 AFCON Qualifier

Dreams FC midfielder Michael Agberkponu was phenomenal for the Black Meteors as they defied all odds to beat Algeria to qualify for the African U23 Cup of Nations.

After last weekend’s 1-1 draw in Accra, Coach Ibrahim Tanko tweaked his side in search of an improbable victory against the Fennec foxes in Es Setif on Tuesday.

Agberkponu was handed a start in place of the suspended Majeed Ashmeru with Isaac Twum pairing him in the middle.

He repaid the coach’s faith by putting up an efficient performance in midfield.

The talented midfielder never put a foot wrong, he kept it neat and tidy and helped his side recycle possession throughout the game.

Yaw Yeboah’s wonderful solo goal in the 70th minute proved to be the difference as Ghana secured a hard fought 2-1 aggregate win.

The Black Meteors will join hosts Egypt and other qualified countries at the tournament which will be staged between 5-22 November.

The winner of the tournament and two runner ups will automatically advance to represent Africa at the 2020 Olympics Men’s Football Competition.
